General Information

This pathfinder is designed to help AFRL and AFIT customers (and library staff) at Wright-Patterson (W-P) Air Force Base to identify, locate, and access, or order technical reports, technical papers and other frequently requested materials considered "Gray Literature" from major technical collections.

If you are not a W-P employee or contractor, please contact your local servicing library, NTIS, or register with DTIC. Our library may loan a paper technical report to another library via interlibrary loan, however this does not include AFIT theses.

Note - Acronyms and abbreviations are explained within the description for each technical report type. Those not found here may be found on DoE's extensive Acronym site, or on the USAF Patches site.

AFIT/AFRL Library customers - Before ordering a technical report, please check the sources below. We own much more than our locally produced reports -- about a half million in microfiche and paper, but few of these are indexed in our library catalog. Thousands of circulating (paper) reports are shelved on our second floor, and thousands more are available online. We also have copies of most W-P technical reports in our Technical Reports Center. Our Reference Librarians (below) will be glad to assist customers in locating reports and other needed materials.

The primary indexes to our major reports collections are the DTIC and NASA databases. Both exist in public and private versions, with the private versions citing reports that are not available to the public.

If you are a registered library customer with full privileges, and have checked 1) the online DTIC and NASA databases, 2) our uncataloged reports in the AFIT/AFRL Library in Bldg. 642 [via a Reference Librarian], 3) our cataloged collection, and 4) our Technical Reports Center in Bldg. 196, and not found a needed report, please use our "document requests" forms links below. We will purchase reports over 50 pages in length, unless they can be supplied locally or are online. Reports under 50 pages can be freely copied in the library.

Note - AFRL is a contracted library so we can order public reports and "DoD and DoD contractor" reports, but requests for copies of "DoD Only," or classified are referred to the Technical Reports Center Librarian, (937) 255-7415.

U.S. government produced reports are usually not copyrighted. Other materials described below may be copyrighted.
