Colonel CLARK L. ALLRED Colonel Clark Allred is the Deputy Director of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Directed Energy Directorate at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. He oversees an organization of over 800 military and civilian scientists, engineers, contractors, and support personnel focused on developing and transitioning directed energy research technologies into military systems. Colonel Allred entered the Air Force in 1996 as a distinguished graduate of the AFROTC program at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving both master and doctorate degrees in materials science and engineering. He began his Air Force career at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts, developing algorithms for automated targeted detection in hyperspectral data, one of which received a patent. As a Draper Fellow at MIT, Col Allred researched radiation effects on materials. His research as an Air Force Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory focused on nuclear reactor modeling. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Chief Scientist of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center, as the principal scientific advisor to the Commander. In this role, he fostered technical collaboration, leading initiatives for small business investment and education. His previous assignments include materiel leader for AFRL’s High Speed Vehicle Science & Technology branch where he directed a $65-million investment in hypersonics. He also served as deputy chief of the Nuclear Forensics Office at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, helped manage the Air Force scientist and engineer career field, and was an associate professor of physics at the United States Air Force Academy. During this latter assignment, he deployed to Qatar as deputy chief of staff for Combined Forces Operations Component Command forward headquarters. Prior to teaching, he was a program manager for atomic/molecular physics and structural mechanics at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
