The Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program hosts a variety of programs designed to help active duty Soldiers planning to separate from the military as well as retired veterans.

Bob Gray, SFL-TAP Veteran Affairs Benefit Advisor, said the mission of the VA benefits program is to educate Soldiers about the benefits they can receive when transitioning from military life to civilian life.

“I want to make Soldiers and their spouses aware of their benefits,” Gray said.

VA benefits advisors can assist veterans with understanding how to obtain VA Home Loan financing for the purchase or refinancing of their home without the requirement of a down payment.

They can provide information on education benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill or Yellow Ribbon Program. Depending on the veteran’s educational goals or needs, VA benefits advisors can help with getting them involved in a four-year university or technical-school program.

VA benefits advisors also provide life insurance, disability compensation and health care information.

“We want them to make the best choice,” Gray said.

VA benefits classes are scheduled to meet weekly, and Soldiers should contact their SFL-TAP counselor for the schedule. SFL-TAP counselors are assigned when Soldiers begin transition and pre-separation briefings.

The VA office has advisors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays at Army Community Service in Building 7264. This is to help inform Soldiers on how the VA office can assist them, Gray said.

The VA benefits office hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Building 212, Room 218.

VA benefits advisors are available by walk-in or by appointment.

“We encourage one-on-one appointments,” Gray said.
