Dr. Imelda Atencio awarded Bromilow Award from New Mexico State

Dr. Imelda Atencio, Laser Division Chief for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate, receives the Frank Bromilow Award from Dr. David V. Jauregui, the interim Dean of the College of Engineering at New Mexico State University Feb. 21, 2025. Atencio won the 49th Frank Bromilow Lectureship Award and Honoria from New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering for her work at AFRL. She has been with AFRL since 1987 and has worked on optical design, adaptive optics, optical communication and spent 19 years conducting research at the Starfire Optical range. Atencio received her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University and went on to earn her master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Arizona. Dr. Steve Stochaj, of the New Mexico State College of Engineering, nominated Atencio as an example of the possibilities that exist for engineering students. The Frank Bromilow Award was named after the dean of New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering from 1961 to 1974. Bromilow is credited with enhancing the quality of the college’s faculty and engineering program.
