Capt. Erin Hager, a recent graduate of the Air Force Institute of Technology’s Aerospace Engineering Program, additively manufactured parts with AF-9628, an Air Force steel, for her graduate thesis work. She determined that parts additively manufactured with AF-9628 are about 20 percent stronger than conventional additively manufactured alloys in terms of ultimate tensile strength. The Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate sponsored her research, which focused on determining if AF-9628 is suitable for additive manufacturing.
