AFRL PHOTOS

Maj. Whit Collins

In this 2018 photo, Maj. Whit Collins is inside the cockpit of an F-16, the first Air Force aircraft designed with fly-by-wire flight controls. This system uses computer-generated signals that transmit the pilot’s commands to the flight control surfaces. The Flight Dynamics Laboratory, now part of the AFRL Aerospace Systems Directorate, developed this technology, which integrates the pilot with the airframe, thereby creating a highly responsive and effective unit.
