Former director of AFRL's Information Directorate retires from Air Force after 33 years of service

ROME, N.Y. – Col. Timothy J. Lawrence officially retired from active duty service July 1, but the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate here bid him farewell May 27.  
 
Lawrence assumed command of the directorate in July 2018 where he directed over 1,200 military, DOD civilians, and on-site contractors to develop and research command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) and cyber (+1) technologies while managing a budget of over $1.6 billion.
 
Throughout his career, he was recognized with many achievements and notable accomplishments including, but not limited to: two Master’s degrees, one in Nuclear engineering, and another in Military Operations and Scientific Art; a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electrical and Satellite Engineering; the first American to swim from Jersey (UK) to France (19 miles); World Jaycees Outstanding Young Person of the World for Technology in 2001; awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Legion of Merit decorations, and many more accolades.
 
A retirement open house was held May 27, where military members and civilians gathered at the directorate to bid farewell to the former director and present parting gifts for his retirement.
 
Division chiefs, staff, and distinguished guests presented gifts to honor Lawrence for his altruistic service and commitment to the Air Force throughout his distinguished career. To solidify his contributions here in Rome, the Innovare Advancement Center chose to honor  Lawrence by dedicating their Quantum Lab in his name.
