AFRL partners with NASA in CubeSat navigation, communication mission
A sensor experiment named Gridded Retarding Ion Drift Sensor deploys from the International Space Station Dec. 29, 2022. The sensor, developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate is hosted on NASA’s six-unit cube satellite petitSat, or Plasma Enhancements in the Ionosphere-Thermosphere Satellite. PetitSat will study a layer in Earth’s upper atmosphere known as the ionosphere to provide insight on space weather disturbances and their impact on navigation and communication systems. Latest milestone brings NTS-3 Vanguard closer to 2023 launch
The Navigation Technology Satellite-3, or NTS-3, spacecraft is shown in an anechoic test chamber prior to electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility testing in Palm Bay, Florida. This experimental satellite is being designed, built and tested by L3Harris Technologies, and will be used by the Air Force Research Laboratory and partner organizations as part of an integrated system to conduct a one-year demonstration of advanced technologies and concepts in satellite navigation. The NTS-3 launch is anticipated in late 2023 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida on the first U.S. government flight of the new United Launch Alliance Vulcan rocket. (Courtesy Photo)

AFRL infrastructure projects boost readiness, security
The Air Force Research Laboratory’s, or AFRL, Information Directorate, completes construction on a new perimeter fence and security entrance facility in Rome, New York, Nov. 1, 2022. AFRL upgraded its security measures with new state-of-the-art controls and facilities to welcome employees and visitors to the site. The new enhancements will secure the nation's premier research organization for command, control, communications, computers and intelligence and cyber technologies.
