ABOUT USAFSAM

The 711th Human Performance Wing’s U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) was established in 1918 and is the premier institute for education and worldwide operational consultation in Aerospace and Operational Medicine. USAFSAM has been a leader in the field of aerospace medicine and human performance from the beginnings of aviation through the onset of the space age and into the present, and is the oldest continually operating institution of its kind. It is also host to the largest aeromedical library in the world. By joining forces with the Air Force and Navy Research Laboratories, USAFSAM fully leverages aeromedical, science, and technology to optimize performance, health, and survival of healthy humans in abnormal or extreme environments, including combat, air, space, and cyberspace.

Consultation

USAFSAM is the primary operational, aeromedical, and human performance consultation service for all Department of the Air Force bases worldwide, regional and Air Force headquarters, the Department of Defense, joint service partners, and other government organizations. To solve complex issues requiring a broader skill set than one team possesses, the consultative teams frequently work collaboratively to address issues in a multi-disciplinary fashion. Typically the USAFSAM consultation function draws from a diverse internal pool of expertise but can also access the combined capability of co-located organizations within the 711 HPW and across Wright-Patterson AFB through an integrated process to address all consultative requests. USAFSAM also has unique outreach response capabilities with the Air Force Radiation Assessment Team and the Theater Epidemiology Team, as well as outbreak investigation, and food and water vulnerability assessment teams.
